How to Convert an American Express Statement to Excel or QuickBooks
Turn an Amex statement PDF into Excel, CSV, or a QuickBooks .QBO file — Business Gold, Platinum, and personal cards, with charge/payment polarity handled.
American Express statements are long, dense, and PDF-only once they age out of the download window. Here is how to convert an Amex statement — Business Gold, Business Platinum, Blue Business, or a personal card — into Excel, CSV, or a QuickBooks .QBO file with the signs pointing the right way.
Get your Amex statement PDF
- Sign in at americanexpress.com.
- Go to Statements & Activity → Billing Statements.
- Pick the closing date and download the PDF.
Amex keeps up to 7 years of statements online (older ones may take a day to retrieve) — more than enough runway for catch-up work.
Convert it
- Open Convert Bank Statements and drop the Amex PDF in.
- Every charge, payment, and credit is extracted automatically.
- Check the balance badge: the statement must reconcile — previous balance + new charges − payments/credits = new balance.
- Export as Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.QBO), or OFX.
Amex-specific tips
- Polarity is the classic Amex trap. Credit-card statements flip signs relative to bank accounts; a naive converter posts charges as deposits. Charges and payments carry the correct sign into QuickBooks here.
- Employee cards on one statement: business statements grouping several cardmembers convert as one account with every cardmember's charges included — nothing dropped between sections.
- Membership Rewards summaries and promotional pages are ignored — you only pay for pages with transactions.
- Scanned copies work; the balance check catches OCR misreads. See the scanned statement guide.
Is it accurate?
Every statement must reconcile against its own printed balances before you export. Rows that break the math get flagged for review — misreads don't reach your books. Details on our security page.
