How to Convert a Credit Card Statement to Excel or QuickBooks
Turn any credit card statement PDF — Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover — into Excel, CSV, or a QuickBooks .QBO file with charges and payments signed correctly. Every balance verified.
Credit card statements are the messiest part of most catch-up jobs. Issuers keep less CSV history than banks do, the layout changes between personal and business cards, and the one thing that has to be right — whether a row is a charge or a payment — is exactly what generic PDF-to-Excel tools get wrong. Here is how to convert a credit card statement PDF into Excel, CSV, or a QuickBooks .QBO file, including scanned copies.
Get your credit card statement PDF
The path is the same shape at every issuer — sign in, open the card, download the month:
- Chase — Statements on the card's account page.
- American Express — Statements & Activity → pick the closing date.
- Capital One — View Statements under the card.
- Citi — Statements in the account menu.
- Discover — Statements → View PDF.
Business cards (Ink, Amex Business, Spark) sit in the same place. Download the whole billing period rather than a date-range export — the statement PDF carries the printed opening and closing balance, which is what makes the math checkable.
Convert it
- Open Convert Bank Statements and drop the card statement PDF in.
- Every transaction is extracted automatically — no template setup.
- Check the balance badge: Balanced means previous balance + charges − payments and credits equals the printed new balance.
- Export as Excel, CSV, QuickBooks (.QBO), or OFX and import via QuickBooks' Upload from file.
Credit-card-specific tips
- Polarity is the whole game. On a card, a purchase increases what you owe and a payment decreases it — the opposite of a checking account. Charges and payments are signed correctly on export, so QuickBooks doesn't book your purchases as deposits or your payment as income.
- Payments, refunds, and credits are not the same row. A merchant refund, a statement credit, and your monthly payment all reduce the balance but belong in different accounts. They're kept distinct instead of collapsed into one "credit" column.
- Interest and fees come through as their own lines. Finance charges, annual fees, late fees, and foreign transaction fees export separately so they can be coded straight to expense accounts.
- Multiple cards on one statement. Amex and business card programs often bill several cardholders on a single PDF — each card exports to its own Excel worksheet and its own .QBO block, not a flattened pile.
- Foreign currency charges keep both the original amount and the settled USD amount where the statement prints both.
- Scanned or mailed copies work too; the balance check is what catches OCR misreads. See the scanned statement guide.
Is it accurate?
Every account is reconciled the way a bookkeeper would check it. If a row breaks the math, it's flagged for review instead of silently exported — so a misread digit can't sneak into your books. Details on our security page.
FAQ
Which cards are supported? Any card statement you have as a PDF — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, store cards, and business card programs, digital or scanned.
Will QuickBooks read the charges the right way? Yes. Card statements export with credit-card polarity, so charges land as charges and your payment lands as a payment.
How far back can I go? As far as your PDFs go. Most issuers keep 2–7 years online, and anything you've saved converts regardless of age.
Is my data safe? Your PDF is never stored and never used to train AI. See our Privacy Policy.
How much does it cost? Sign up and get 15 free pages. Page packs start at $12 and never expire — built for lumpy catch-up work, not subscriptions. See pricing.
